OSI offers Equipment Performance Evaluations (EPE) on Medical and Dental X-ray imaging equipment.

December 3, 2020

According to iData Research, over 1.4 billion dental X-rays were performed in 2018 in the United States, with procedure types ranging from the classic intraoral x-rays to the newer cone beam computed tomographies (CBCTs). Over 90% of these fell under the intraoral X-ray shot category such as bitewing, incisors, or molar images.

The use of diagnostic imaging has increased dramatically over the past decade, contributing to medical costs and to medical exposure to ionizing radiation. The recent overview from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) reported that the rise in volume of imaging services per Medicare beneficiary outstripped the growth of all other services physicians provide. OSI offers Equipment Performance Evaluations (EPE) on diagnostic x-ray equipment for medical and dental facilities. These tests ensure Federal and State Regulatory requirements are met, as well as recommendations of the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Joint Commission (JCAHO), and other accrediting organizations. We specialize in helping our medical and dental clients optimize their imaging techniques to provide consistent image quality with optimal (not too high or too low) radiation exposure.

The use of multiple makes and models of x-ray machines within a single facility can be challenging. The dental technician is challenged with knowing the optimum combination of kVp, mA, and time (techniques) for each x-ray unit for each type of exam. As a result, we see many clinics use the same technique all year long. We can help provide the most appropriate technique factors to use on each unit for each exam in your facility. This ensures the patient receives the optimal amount of radiation exposure and the best imaging quality. The California Dental Association (CDA) considers this to be a best practice.

OSI also tests other imaging equipment: dental x-ray (Panoramic, Cone Beam Computed Tomography, Intraoral and portable units), Mammography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, & Digital Radiography.
