What Are The Legal Requirements Of Using X-ray Machines?

October 24, 2016

In the field we often find that there is confusion around the legal requirements of using x-ray machines.  Let’s clear this up.

Users of radioactive materials are licensed.  Users of radiation producing machines (x-ray equipment) are not licensed.  However, the x-ray equipment must be registered with the state.

What many companies using x-ray machines (including diagnostic, x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, electron microscopes etc.) often don’t realize are that a written radiation safety program should be an integral part of the operating procedures for using radiation machines.

Here in California the state Department of Health Services also requires users of ionizing radiation producing machines (x-ray equipment) to have a written radiation safety program.

So don't get caught in a regulatory bind. Let OSI review and help you establish a sensible and reasonable radiation safety program for all of your x-ray applications.

We can also help you make sure you understand and implement effective programs for operating non-ionizing radiation producing machines like lasers.
